A new concern Brock Huard has about Seahawks losing OC Kubiak

It seems like a foregone conclusion that Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak will leave the team after the Super Bowl to be the Las Vegas Raiders’ replacement to Pete Carroll as head coach.

There is an obvious concern about that, which is that any time a coordinator goes to another team for a head coaching position, they usually take some of their own assistants with them.

As Seattle Sports’ Brock Huard mentioned Wednesday from Radio Row in San Francisco ahead of Super Bowl 60, the concern has mainly been focused exclusively on Kubiak taking fellow offensive coaches with him to Vegas. But there’s nothing stopping Kubiak from also building out his staff on the other side of the ball by taking some of Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald’s assistants with him.

“You know who we’ve not talked about? I was actually listening to a national broadcast yesterday because sometimes we’re too close to it – what’s that whole forest and trees thing? The defensive guys (Kubiak) could take,” said Huard, a longtime football broadcast analyst and former NFL quarterback.

Huard then pointed at Macdonald’s defensive coordinator. Aden Durde is in his second year with Seattle, but as Huard mentioned, Macdonald calls the defensive plays for the Seahawks, which means taking a DC role with another team could be a step up for Durde.

And there are other coaches on the Seahawks’ defensive staff who could be in line for bigger roles should they go with Kubiak.

“Karl Scott, the secondary coach, who’s done a really good job… Pretty beloved guy on that side of it, too,” Huard continued.

“I think you get so hyper-focused on Kubiak thinking, OK, how many of the offensive guys are you going to take? Well, hold on a second. He’s had to face this defense (in practice all season), and Mike Macdonald calls it, but guess what (Kubiak) gets to see every day? He gets to see Durde as the defensive coordinator, and he gets to watch Karl Scott.”

Huard: Two in-house options to replace Seahawks OC Kubiak

While the Seahawks are just days away from playing for the title in the Super Bowl, Huard couldn’t stop himself from being concerned about what could happen to Macdonald’s coaching staff so soon in his tenure.

“We’re only two years into this thing. I don’t want to see any of them leave, but that’s also the nature of this league,” Huard said. “It’s why this league is so hard to sustain and so hard to win and so hard to do what New England did for 20 years and nobody else has been able to do. Because you do lose good people. And there are going to be good people that are going to go out that door. I just hope it’s not too many of them.”
