Seahawks’ Lawrence named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Seattle Seahawks defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was rewarded for his historic performance against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday with NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Lawrence, one of Seattle’s biggest free agent signings in the offseason, became just the fourth player in league history two return fumbles for touchdowns in the same game during the Seahawks’ 44-22 Week 10 victory.

Both of Lawrence’s TDs came on strikingly similar plays.

The veteran defensive end’s first scoop and score came early in the first quarter. Linebacker Tyrice Knight found a hole in the Cardinals’ pass protection on a blitz and delivered a hit on Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett, knocking the ball loose for Lawrence  to snatch off a bounce and run back for a 34-yard score and 14-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Knight came on another blitz and knocked the ball loose from Brissett again, and Lawrence picked it up and ran 22 yards for the score. Seattle led 28-0 after Lawrence’s second TD.

Lawrence added four tackles, one tackle for loss and 0.5 sacks in his standout game against Arizona. The Boise State product has 25 tackles, seven tackles for loss and four sacks in eight games this season.

This is the second career Defensive Player of the Week honor for Lawrence, who also won one in 2017 with the Dallas Cowboys. He is the first Seahawk to win the award since Coby Bryant and Leonard Williams went back-to-back in Weeks 12 and 13 of last season.

Seattle signed Lawrence to a three-year deal worth up $42 million in the offseason.

The Seahawks are 7-2 and tied for the best record in the NFC with the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles. They face the NFC West-rival Rams at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
