Ricardo Lockette explains the art of trash talking Colin Kaepernick

Seahawks special team’s ace Ricardo Lockette is a well-known trash talker. He’s claimed to have told opponents that he has “no regard for your well-being.”

So what would the tactic be if he was lined up against good friend and Seahawks rival Colin Kaepernick?

“With him, it would make it a whole lot easier,” Lockette told 710 ESPN’s “Danny, Dave and Moore.” “I would go a little deeper and I would dig because it’s a mental game. I would say something that would really get under his skin and just walk off. And he would be like, ‘You know what, is he really my friend?'”

The art of smack talking is ageless and knows no athletic boundaries. It’s taken forms of Mohammad Ali’s creativity, John Randall’s eye paint, Gary Payton’s relentlessness, and Richard Sherman’s postgame interviews. But Lockette, a five-year veteran who went undrafted out of Fort Valley State, makes mind-games his mission. That holds true for Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who Lockette met during the 2011 NFL Combine. They have “been buddies ever since.”

Lockette said Kaepernick was “really excited” about the Thursday matchup when the two spoke Monday night.

Lockette acknowledged that Kaepernick is at a career crossroads of sorts with the rebuilding 49ers, and that he’s started to play better of late.

“Hopefully that stops this week,” he said. “I’m not cheering for him this week. I wish him safety, but a couple interceptions wouldn’t be bad. A fumble here or there, but no, he’s a great guy. Like I said, there are no friends on the football field, so I wish him the best after this game.”
