Seahawks, GM John Schneider reach contract extension

The Seattle Seahawks and general manager John Schneider have agreed to a multi-year contract extension through the 2031 NFL Draft, the team announced on Wednesday.

Schneider’s previous extension came in January 2021 and ran through the 2027 draft.

Schneider has been Seahawks GM since 2010, when he arrived in Seattle alongside former longtime head coach Pete Carroll and helped usher in the most successful era in franchise history. Schneider is the fourth-longest tenured GM in the NFL, trailing only Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, Duke Tobin of the Cincinnati Bengals and Mickey Loomis of the New Orleans Saints.

Since Schneider took over as GM, the Seahawks have posted the sixth-best record in the league at 147-96-1. During that span, they have totaled 10 playoff appearances, nine 10-win seasons, five division titles, two Super Bowl appearances and the franchise’s lone Super Bowl title.

From 2010 through 2023, Schneider and Carroll worked together in football personnel matters. Along the way, they built star-laden teams that included the likes of Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Bobby Wagner.

After Carroll and the Seahawks parted ways in January 2024, Schneider assumed the final say in personnel decisions and added the title of president of football operations. Schneider then replaced Carroll with defensive guru and first-time head coach Mike Macdonald, who guided Seattle last fall to its first 10-win season since 2020.

In recent years, Schneider has also overseen a dramatic roster reshaping that’s centered on a trio of blockbuster trades.

In 2022, Schneider dealt Wilson to the Denver Broncos, which netted a slew of draft picks that ultimately resulted in several promising young players – two-time All-Pro cornerback Devon Witherspoon, left tackle Charles Cross and edge rushers Boye Mafe and Derick Hall.

And this past March, Schneider traded veteran quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders and star wide receiver DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Those two trades netted a pair of early-round picks in April’s NFL Draft, which helped the Seahawks restock their roster with young talent through a highly intriguing 11-player draft class.
