Instant reaction to Seattle Seahawks’ 17-13 loss to 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks came up short down the stretch in their season opener, giving up a late touchdown and losing a fumble on their final drive to fall 17-13 to the NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers.

Mike Salk – Brock and Salk (6-10 a.m. weekdays)

It’s amazing how often the same things pop up for the same people at the biggest moments.

Riq Woolen has all the ability in the world, but twice he got greedy on the final Niners’ drive, and twice it came back to bite them.

Sam Darnold has had fumble issues at crucial points of games going all the way back to his time at USC, and losing a ball inside the opposing red zone with the game on the line would certainly fit inside the category of “crucial.”

There were some real positives for the Seahawks in their first game of the season. But that’s a preventable loss to a beat up and beatable San Francisco team. Plenty to clean up before a long trip to Pittsburgh next Sunday.

Mike Lefko – Wyman and Bob (2-7 p.m.)

I think we knew there would be growing pains with this offense, but that was an uninspired, ugly display for nearly all of the second half. Way too many screen passes and too much of trying to alternate Kenneth Walker III in with Zach Charbonnet at running back. It feels like Charbonnet is indeed better equipped to be the featured back in this offense as the season goes along.

‘Not the start that we wanted’ for Seahawks’ offense

Outside of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, there also wasn’t much of a receiving threat that emerged. Maybe that’s Darnold comfort level with JSN or receivers weren’t able to win matchups, but the lack of a secondary receiving option looms large right now.

The Seahawks’ defense kept them in it for most of the game but unfortunately Riq Woolen had two absolutely critical lapses at the worst time.

The prevailing notion from the national media about the Seahawks is that the rest of the division got better while the Seahawks have a lot of question marks to iron out at key positions. That certainly looks to be the case after our small sample of Week 1.
