Injury Update: The latest on Seahawks’ left tackle situation

The Seattle Seahawks’ left tackle situation looked a bit ominous on Tuesday, when the team listed starter Charles Cross and backup Josh Jones as non-participants on its first practice report of the week.

It remains a question mark after head coach Mike Macdonald spoke to reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

Macdonald said Jones was “just banged up a little bit” after Sunday’s win over the Carolina Panthers, but stopped short of saying the veteran swing tackle should be able to play in Saturday night’s winner-take-all showdown against the San Francisco 49ers, which will determine both the NFC West title and the NFC’s No. 1 seed.

Jones started the past two games in place of Cross, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Jones played every snap in both games before landing on Tuesday’s practice report with ankle and knee injuries.

“We’ll see how Josh practices today,” Macdonald said. “He’s going through walkthrough now. We’ll see how it goes.”

Macdonald also said there’s a “non-zero chance” that Cross could return for Saturday night’s game, but said the fourth-year starter would sit out practice again on Wednesday. Cross hasn’t practiced since getting injured in the final minute of Seattle’s Week 15 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

“Some things need to happen before he plays,” Macdonald said. “… I’d say it’s a non-zero chance that he plays, but we’ll see.”

On Tuesday, the Seahawks signed undrafted rookie offensive tackle Amari Kight off their practice squad to their 53-man roster. Kight hit the maximum of three practice squad elevations this season after being elevated for each of Seattle’s previous two games.

In addition to Cross, Jones and Kight, the only other offensive tackles on the Seahawks’ 53-man roster are starting right tackle Abraham Lucas and rookie guard/tackle Mason Richman.

Kight has played just two offensive snaps this season, both in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals. Richman’s lone offensive snap came in Week 5 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“If Josh can play, he’s gonna play,” Macdonald said. “If Charles gets better and can play, he’ll play. If not, then we’ve got some other guys that can play.”
