Brock: A draft fit who could be Seahawks’ ‘next evolution’

Head coach Mike Macdonald and the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks already have one ultra-versatile hybrid defensive back in Nick Emmanwori.

Could they add another one early in this week’s NFL Draft?

If so, one intriguing option could be 6-foot-1, 190-pound versatile Arizona defensive back Treydan Stukes, who was highlighted by former NFL quarterback Brock Huard as a possible Seahawks target during his draft profile series on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk.

Huard views Stukes’ combination of blazing speed, big-time playmaking and positional flexibility as a potential antidote to some of the issues star wide receiver Puka Nacua and the Los Angeles Rams gave the Seahawks this past season.

For as great as Seattle’s top-ranked scoring defense was, the Rams exploited it for a combined 64 points and 1,060 total yards over the division rivals’ Week 16 and NFC Championship Game showdowns.

“If you’re going to slow down the Rams, is the status quo going to be good enough?” Huard said. “Are you going to just roll out the same cast of characters … and think the same exact personnel is going to be able to slow down that wagon of the Rams, who are also probably going to add in this draft?

“Or do you need some new pieces to possibly play with?”

‘Coby Bryant, but much faster’

Stukes played all over the field at Arizona, logging more than 1,100 snaps as a nickel corner, more than 900 snaps as an outside corner and more than 500 snaps as a safety over a six-year college career that included an extra COVID year and a medical redshirt year.

Along the way, Stukes totaled seven interceptions, 29 pass breakups and 12 tackles for loss in 52 career games.

In 2025, Stukes received third-team AP All-American honors after recording four interceptions, six pass breakups and a sack in 10 games. He ranked fifth out of 908 cornerbacks in Pro Football Focus grading last fall and didn’t allow a touchdown in coverage.

And among safeties at the NFL combine, Stukes posted the third-fastest 40-yard dash (4.33 seconds) and the second-fastest 10-yard split (1.50 seconds). He also tied for the best broad jump (10 feet, 10 inches) and tied for the fifth-best vertical jump (38 inches) among safeties.

“Think in some ways Coby Bryant, but much faster,” Huard said, referring to the playmaking Seahawks safety who departed in free agency to sign with the Chicago Bears.

“Coby Bryant was the Jim Thorpe Award winner out of Cincinnati, but fell to the fourth round. Why? Because he was a 4.54 guy. Treydan Stukes ran 4.33.”

‘You’ve got to evolve’

ESPN ranks Stukes as the No. 5 safety and No. 69 overall prospect in this year’s draft class, while The Athletic’s Dane Brugler ranks him as the No. 8 cornerback and the No. 56 overall prospect.

Most draft projections have Stukes being selected at some point in the second round. So if the Seahawks wanted to draft him, it’d probably mean trading back from their No. 32 overall pick and taking him at some point in the late 30s or 40s.

Seattle has other positional needs, but Huard believes having two ultra-versatile chess pieces in Emmanwori and Stukes could be a game-changer against the Rams and other top offenses as the Seahawks take aim at another Lombardi Trophy.

“I think this is going to be the next evolution,” Huard said. “(The Seahawks) don’t sit still. … They evolve, and you’ve got to evolve.

“So, how do you evolve with that? Is it a unique edge that you want around the line of scrimmage? Or is it one of these unique second-level players that’s kind of a safety, that’s kind of a nickel, that’s kind of a corner, that can run 4.33 and be in the hip pocket of Puka Nacua and anybody else you’re gonna face?”
