Dave Wyman breaks down a play-action pass from the Chiefs in the Seahawks' third preseason game, in which quick-thinking Seahawks linebackers picked up on tells to avoid a bigger gain.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that one of the best defensive units in the league was able to stop an opposing quarterback from making a big play, but one play in particular during the Seahawks’ preseason win over Kansas City impressed 710 ESPN Seattle’s Dave Wyman. It also gave him the perfect opportunity to break down the tricks to diagnosing a play-action pass.

In the video above, Wyman highlights a play-action pass attempt from the Kansas City Chiefs. Quarterback Alex Smith picked up eight yards with his legs by getting around Cliff Avril on the edge, but linebackers K.J. Wright, Bobby Wagner and Terence Garvin were able to quickly pick up on play-action “tells” to avoid a larger gain. Wyman shows what these tells look like and how the Seahawks linebackers responded.
