Daniel Jeremiah: Seahawks were ‘clearly the better team’ vs Rams

The Seattle Seahawks came up short in Sunday’s highly anticipated NFC West showdown, falling 21-19 to the Los Angeles Rams in a clash between two teams with Super Bowl aspirations.

The Seahawks were undone by a nightmare performance by Sam Darnold, whose four interceptions essentially handed the Rams 14 points off turnovers. But even after the four picks, Seattle still had a chance to escape with a victory before Jason Myers’ last-second 61-yard field goal sailed wide right.

That’s why NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah still has an optimistic view of the Seahawks, as he shared during his weekly appearance Tuesday on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk.

“I thought they were clearly the better team in the game,” Jeremiah said. “I mean, they dominated the game in just about every way you can dominate, except they just had turnovers. And they had a chance to win the game at the end. Like, all that stuff happened – usually you get four interceptions, you have no shot in a game. But yet, there they were.”

The Seahawks outgained the Rams 414-249 in total yardage, piling up the most yards by a Rams opponent this season while also holding the Rams to their second-fewest yards of the year.

Seattle’s suffocating defense stymied the Rams’ high-scoring attack, holding MVP candidate Matthew Stafford to season lows in completion rate (53.6%), passing yards (130) and yards per pass attempt (4.6) – the latter of which was the lowest mark of Stafford’s entire 67-game Rams tenure.

And even for all of Darnold’s struggles, he bounced back by going 12 of 15 for 111 yards on the Seahawks’ final two drives. Darnold led an 11-play, 84-yard touchdown march that cut the deficit to 21-19 with 2:23 left, and then guided Seattle off its own 1-yard line for a 10-play, 56-yard drive that gave his team a shot at a game-winning field goal in the closing seconds.

“I left that game thinking two things,” Jeremiah said. “No. 1, based off the end of the game, Sam Darnold, even after that performance, was not broken. He still had it in him to get them down the field. And No. 2, I mean, look – if that’s as bad as you (play), you turn the ball over and all those things, and you still have a chance to win that football game? Like, they’re going to be just fine.”
