An anticipated showdown between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers turned into a sloppy affair but still delivered a down-to the-wire finish. The Seahawks, however, were on the wrong side of it.

After their performance Sunday, which came just two weeks removed from a similarly sloppy loss to the Washington Commanders and a week removed from a franchise-record 150 penalty yards in a win over the lowly Chargers, former NFL quarterback Brock Huard believes the Seahawks are falling short of the complementary football head coach Mike Macdonald often speaks of as a goal for his team.

Below is what Huard had to say in his reaction video to Seattle’s loss to San Francisco. It has been edited for its clarity.

Well, I think this is one of the most challenging reaction videos I’ve done in quite a while because my mind is just racing with about a million different things that went into that game that was incredible theater.

I know there were seven turnovers combined, and a lot of that had to do with the violence of the defenses and the way those guys played. But that felt like a playoff or NFC title kind of game as far as energy expended and how hard guys played, but this is a difficult video because there’s about 100 different directions to take this thing – Sam’s early interception, the interception to begin the half, the fumbles by the running backs, the running game that’s non-existent.

But I think the big picture and I think just to tie that game into what’s been emblematic all season is this group is not playing complementary ball.

They’re not tying together the three phases. They’re not terrific in the return units or the coverage units on special teams like they were a year ago. There is no run game to speak of, no explosive run game. It’s a detriment right now running the football, and that doesn’t complement a defense that is still doing some extraordinary things.

JSN, I know he’ll be thinking about that drop more than anything, is still the best receiver in the game.

Until this crew ties their game together in all three phases, you’re just not going to see the championship quality we did a year ago.
