The Seattle Seahawks are wrapping up the first of two weeks spent preparing for Super Bowl LX, so during The Huddle we asked Boye Mafe a question on everyone’s mind: What exactly happens right now?
GM John Schneider details how Seahawks regained drafting touch
“We have time to self-scout and look at what we do, figure out how we can be our best,” Mafe said. “And then on top of that is extra time to prepare for the opponent. It’s not really time off. You get time to yourself a little bit, but we’re still locked in. We’re treating it like we’ve done all year.”
Despite a shakier-than-normal performance to finish the season (479 yards surrendered to the Rams), confidence remains sky-high in the building. And that’s been the case for months now, which is part of how Mafe knew this team was ahead of schedule.
Mafe was quick to answer when asked when he knew this team could be special.
“Camp,” he said. “I knew it in camp. The way we flew around, the way we held each other accountable. I’ve been here for four years, and the way we were moving in camp and the way we’d battle the offense, I was like, oh yeah, we’re movin’ different, we’re clicking on all cylinders.
“I feel as if there’s no weakness to our defense. Sometimes you have situations or seasons where you think ‘right here, if we could be better.’ But we — to a point where it’s not the coaches talking to us, we were talking to each other like, we can’t have this happen, we can’t let this happen. And when we were doing that, I was like, oh yeah, we’re gonna do something.”
