Bizarre backwards pass call saves Seattle Seahawks in huge win

There’s a saying that it’s better to be lucky than good. But it’s best to be both.

Late in the game on Thursday night, the Seattle Seahawks were both good and lucky. And that’s why they beat the Los Angeles Rams 38-37 in overtime in the biggest game of the season, clinching a playoff spot along with it.

A bizarre two-point conversation was seemingly gifted to the Seahawks, which tied things up with the Rams at 30-30 with 6:23 left in regulation. Initially, it appeared a screen pass attempt from Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold intended for running back Zach Charbonnet fell incomplete after hitting the arm of the Rams’ Jared Verse. But the play went under review, and it was found that Darnold’s pass didn’t go forward, meaning it was still a live ball when it hit the ground.

As it turned out, the next person to touch the ball was Charbonnet, who picked it up in the end zone. And just like that, the Seahawks had two more points they they thought they had.

The Seahawks would make good on their luck in overtime. After Seattle fell behind 37-30, Darnold found Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a four-yard touchdown pass to cut the Rams’ lead to one. Seattle then went for two for the third time on the night, knowing that if the game ended in a tie, the Rams would own a tiebreaker over the Seahawks for the NFC West title having won the first of the two meetings between the rivals. Darnold then connected with tight end Eric Saubert to lift the Hawks to an incredible 38-37 victory.

Seahawks wide receiver/return man Rasheed Shahid deserves credit for sparking the Seahawks to their miraculous comeback.

It all began when Seattle trailed 30-14 with just over eight minutes left in regulation, and Shahid broke free for a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown. That was followed by a conventional two-point conversion pass from Darnold to receiver Cooper Kupp, bringing the Seahawks within eight points of the Rams.

Then after the Seattle defense forced the Rams to a three-and-out, Shaheed opened the next Seahawks drive with a 31-yard run, and Darnold found tight end A.J. Barner for a 26-yard touchdown pass, setting up the two-point try that tied it up.

The Seahawks would prove to be lucky once more in the fourth quarter. The Rams had kicker Harrison Mevis set up for a 48-yard field goal attempt with 2:11 to go, but Mevis missed a kick for the first time in seven six career NFL games, keeping the score knotted.

Seattle improves to an NFC West-leading and NFC-best 12-3 record, a game ahead of the 11-4 Rams.
