WSU Cougars elevate Haarlow to athletic director

The WSU Cougars have removed the interim tag from Jon Haarlow and elevated him to athletic director, the school announced Tuesday.

Haarlow had been serving as WSU’s interim athletic director since last November, when the school announced it was parting ways with former AD Anne McCoy. Haarlow had spent the past five years working in various roles at WSU and has more than 15 years of experience working in college athletics.

“At Washington State University, we believe in people who step forward, take on challenges, and deliver results that matter,” WSU president Betsy Cantwell said in a press release. “Jon Haarlow has already demonstrated that kind of leadership. This next chapter is about continuing to prove what’s possible to Coug Nation and beyond. We are elevating our Athletics program as a point of pride, connection, and impact across our entire system.”

In 2021, Haarlow began his tenure in Pullman as WSU’s senior associate athletic director and chief financial officer. In 2022, he transitioned to the university’s main campus as the assistant vice president for business and financial services. And in July 2024, he was named the assistant vice president and senior deputy athletic director/chief operating officer for WSU athletics.

Prior to his time at WSU, Haarlow worked in the athletic departments at Lamar University, Abilene Christian University and the University of New Mexico.

Haarlow’s promotion to AD comes ahead of the new-look Pac-12’s launch this summer. On July 1, WSU and Oregon State will be joined by Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Texas State, Utah State and Gonzaga (non-football) in the reconstructed league.

“Jon has been a true partner in building the new Pac-12. His leadership will undoubtedly serve Washington State athletics well as we launch the new league together,” Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould said.
