Brock Huard’s take on UW Huskies’ Apple Cup win over WSU Cougars

A day after the UW Huskies opened the 2026 college football season with an Apple Cup win over the rival WSU Cougars at Husky Stadium, former UW quarterback Brock Huard shared his take on the game.

Apple Cup Notebook: UW Huskies have plenty to improve

Huard, a longtime FOX football broadcaster and Seattle Sports host, spotlighted a couple of standout Huskies while mentioning that the Cougars were “more than respectable” in their first game under new head coach and Washington state native Kirby Moore.

Here’s a look at what Huard said during Monday’s Blue 88 segment on Brock and Salk.

UW Huskies’ defensive front stands out

I would say the good for UW in this case was their front seven. You talk about line of scrimmage and my gosh, this kid out of Bethel High School (Ramzak Fruean), the 6-foot-5 pterodactyl playing defensive end (who) was a receiver and a safety in high school… he was just different. Their freshmen, yeah, there’s a reason they’re all playing and a lot of them starting, because they’re just athletically different than the guys that you saw 17 years ago at spring football… Like, these top-20 recruiting classes that (head coach Jedd Fisch) has put together and some (five-star and four-star recruits), they showed up. So some of their length and their front seven was pretty awesome.

QB Demond Williams Jr. shows Heisman-like potential

Demond’s final couple possessions were elite. Were like All-American, all-conference, Heisman Trophy kind of conversation. Like, that’s what you do. Game got tight and you run and make plays that nobody else can, because he was the fastest guy on the field – football fast. So he was awesome the last couple drives.

Lack of discipline

“(UW’s) 12 penalties for 100-plus yards, and some of them the most undisciplined, was absolutely the bad. I mean, just, what are we doing? I mean, that’s a gift. That’s a gift. Like, you hit him not even 1 yard out of bounds. You hit him 8 yards out of bounds. ‘Oh, I got blocked into the punt returner.’ No… Like, no. … So the undisciplined nature of those penalties out the gate, pretty, pretty frustrating.
