UW Huskies give women’s hoops coach Langley long-term extension

The UW Huskies and women’s basketball coach Tina Langley have agreed on a contract extension that will keep Langley on Montlake through the 2031-2032 season.

“I’m so grateful to President (Robert) Jones, (athletic director) Pat (Chun), (deputy athletic director) Erin (O’Connell), and our entire administrative team for the opportunity to continue being a part of the amazing community here at Washington. Their wholehearted commitment and support of our student-athletes and entire program is deeply felt,” Langley said in a release from the school.“It is an honor and a blessing to serve alongside such a high-character group of young women and outstanding coaching staff. Washington is a special place, and we are so excited for what’s to come.”

Langley’s new deal is worth $7.1 million and will pay her an annual base salary of $1,187,500 for the next six seasons, per The Seattle Times’ Percy Allen.

In five seasons at UW, Langley, 52, has successfully guided the Huskies through their transition to the Big Ten and helped turnaround a program that sputtered following the departure of former Mike Neighbors and star guard Kelsey Plum in 2017.

The Huskies had four straight losing seasons when Langley took over during the 2021-22 campaign. After a 7-16 season in her first year, the program has gone on a run of four straight winning seasons, including reaching the NCAA Tournament in the past two.

“Over the past five seasons, we have witnessed the continued ascent of Washington women’s basketball under the leadership of Coach Langley,” Chun said. “She has distinguished herself as both an exceptional coach and an outstanding leader. We are fortunate to have her leading our program and look forward to building on the strong foundation she has established.”

UW went 22-11 overall and 10-8 in Big Ten play this past season, it’s first 20-win campaign since it reached the Elite Eight with Neighbors and Plum in 2016-17. It was ranked as high as 20th in the AP top 25. It also reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and picked up its first March Madness win since 2016-17.

In total, the Huskies have 83-71 in their five seasons under Langley.

Prior to arriving at UW, Langley was the head coach at Rice for six seasons. She was also an assistant coach at Toledo, Clemson, Georgia and Maryland.
