When the Seattle Mariners made their moves at least year’s trade deadline, they were able to acquire helpful pieces without dealing any of their most-prized prospects.
There’s one way Mariners’ Colt Emerson is showing he’s ‘really special’ already
Despite some early struggles, the Mariners could find themselves in position to be buyers at this year’s trade deadline again.
Perhaps they’ll be able to acquire the pieces they need without dipping into the top of their talent-stocked farm system, but there’s a possibility some of Seattle’s most-hyped prospects could be on the move before the 3 p.m. Aug. 3 trade deadline.
So, which Mariners prospects could be available in trades this year? MLB Pipeline senior writer Jim Callis shared his thoughts with Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy on Monday.
Colt Emerson, who signed an eight-year, $95 million extension in March, is pretty clearly off the table. Callis thinks pitchers Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan could fall in the bucket too.
“I don’t think they would trade (Anderson). I don’t think they trade Ryan Sloan necessarily, unless it was a superstar-type deal,” Callis said.
While Callis has a hard time seeing the Mariners trading Anderson or Sloan, he wouldn’t be surprised to see any of the prospects after them being dealt. That includes fellow MLB Pipeline top 100 members outfielder Lazaro Montes, second baseman/outfielder Michael Arroyo and outfielder Johnny Farmelo. It also includes names like shortstop Felnin Celesten, catcher Luke Stevenson, outfielder Yorger Bautista and shortstop Nick Becker.
Part of Callis’ view is shaped by president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto’s track record of making trades. The other factor is he believes the Mariners should feel comfortable trading prospects away due to their success of identifying and developing talent for the past several years.
“I just think given Jerry’s track record as a GM and the depth of the farm system, I think in the right deal anybody could almost be had,” Callis said. “I don’t think he’s just looking to trade prospect away to just trade them away, but I just think he’s a guy who’s always looking to upgrade his team and he’s not afraid to make moves. And frankly if I’m the Mariners, I would also kind of look at it like, look, we’ve done a really good job of acquiring and developing prospects recently. Not that you’re just going to go trade them all, but if we trade two, three, four prospects, we’re the Mariners, we’ll just go find some more.”
