Mariners sign Seattle Prep alum to minor league deal

The Seattle Mariners signed former Seattle Prep standout Stuart Fairchild to a minor league contract on Sunday.

Fairchild, a 30-year-old outfielder, elected free agency last week after being outrighted off the Cleveland Guardians’ 40-man roster.

Fairchild appeared in 14 games for Cleveland this season, going 3 for 19 at the plate with two stolen bases. The Seattle native spent most of the year at Triple-A Columbus, where he batted .289 with five home runs and an .896 OPS in 40 games.

Fairchild had a brief three-week stint in the Mariners’ organization back in 2022. He appeared in three games with Seattle and four games with Triple-A Tacoma early that season before the Mariners traded him to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for former first-round draft pick Alex Blandino and cash.

A 2017 second-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Fairchild has a career .221/.309/.377 MLB slash line with 18 homers and 27 steals in 291 games for six different teams.

Fairchild is expected to be assigned to Tacoma, but he began his second stint in the Mariners’ system by hitting a three-run homer in the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday night.

Back in March, Fairchild hit a pivotal two-run homer in Taiwan’s World Baseball Classic win over South Korea. Fairchild’s mother is from Taiwan.
