Can Mariners fans cause an earthquake? Seismometer installed for Game 5

We’re going to find out if Seattle Mariners fans can get loud enough to create an earthquake.
A seismometer has been installed at T-Mobile Park ahead of Friday night’s decisive Game 5 of the American League Division Series to measure the seismic activity of an expected crowd of over 47,000 on the corner of Edgar and Dave.

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network shared photos on social media Friday morning of their installation of a seismometer, giving a nod to something Mariners All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh said following the team’s Game 2 win at the stadium on Sunday night.
“Cal Raleigh said he could feel the ground shaking in Game 2, so we came to take a closer look!” reads the post. “… We want to feel this place rocking!”

The device has a catchy nickname: “Richter Rizzs,” in honor of longtime Seattle Mariners radio play-by-play voice Rick Rizzs.

Live monitoring of the seismometer’s readings will be available starting at 4 p.m. Friday at Mariners.PNSN.org.
Seattle sports fans have a history of seismic activity. In 2011, Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch reeled off a 67-yard touchdown run in a playoff win over the New Orleans Saints, commonly known as “the Beast Quake,” that registered a 2.0 on the Richter Scale. A 2.0 is considered the very top of a microearthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Mariners fans will have to get seriously loud to match that output. The Beast Quake game had an official attendance of 66,336 at Lumen Field, which has a capacity of over 20,000 more than T-Mobile Park.
Game 5 of the ALDS is set for a 5:08 p.m. first pitch. Radio coverage on the Seattle Sports app and Seattle Sports 710 AM will begin with an extended pregame at 2 p.m.
