The Seattle Mariners are going with a familiar lineup for Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.
Mariners announce ALDS roster, which has some surprises
Randy Arozarena will remain in the leadoff role, followed by MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh in the No. 2 spot, Julio Rodríguez in the No. 3 hole and Josh Naylor batting cleanup. Jorge Polanco will start at second base and bat fifth, followed by Eugenio Suárez in the No. 6 spot.
With rookie right-hander Troy Melton starting on the mound for Detroit, lefty-hitting Dominic Canzone will be the designated hitter and bat seventh for Seattle. Victor Robles will hit eighth and J.P. Crawford will bat ninth.

Right-hander George Kirby will start on the mound for the Mariners. Kirby posted a middling 4.21 ERA this season, but closed strong with a 2.08 ERA over his final three starts. Kirby threw seven scoreless innings in Seattle’s most recent playoff game – a 1-0, 18-inning loss to the Houston Astros in Game 3 of the 2022 ALDS.
The Mariners likely will see quite a bit of the Tigers’ bullpen in Game 1. Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said Friday that Melton’s start will be “somewhat abbreviated,” due to the fact he’s been used mostly as a reliever since making his MLB debut on July 23.
The Tigers used their top three starting pitchers – including reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal – in their wild card series against the Cleveland Guardians. Skubal is slated to start Game 2 of the ALDS on Sunday.
