Hear Rick Rizzs’ Mariners radio call of Eugenio Suárez’s grand salami

“Get out the rye bread and mustard, Grandma! It is Grand Salami Time!”

Those words have been uttered many times in Seattle Mariners history. But they have never carried as much meaning as they did Friday night.

That call was originated by the late, great Hall of Fame voice of the Mariners, Dave Niehaus, as a way to signal a grand slam by the M’s. And in his memory, longtime Mariners radio voice Rick Rizzs has kept it alive, breaking it out whenever the moment asks for it.

In Game 5 of the ALCS, Eugenio Suárez delivered a swing that asked for it. His grand salami broke a 2-all tie and lifted the Mariners to a 6-2 victory, putting them up 3-2 in the best-of-seven ALCS against the Toronto Blue Jays.

It’s the first time the Mariners have ever won three games in the ALCS, which means it’s the first time they’ve ever been one win away from the World Series.

Rizzs, who is in his 40th year of broadcasting M’s baseball, had a must-hear call of the biggest home run in franchise history on the Mariners Radio Network call on Seattle Sports.

As an added bonus, MLB released a video with the Seattle Sports radio, FS1 and FOX Deportes calls for each of Suárez’s grand slam, Cal Raleigh’s tying home run earlier in the eighth inning, and the last out of the Mariners’ win.

Suárez’s blast sent the sold-out crowd under the T-Mobile Park roof into absolute bedlam. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network has a seismometer installed at the ballpark – coincidentally named “Richter Rizzs” – and shared video of a live Richter reading during and immediately after the grand salami.

By the way, Rizzs had a big moment on the field on Friday night, too. He threw out the first pitch before the game to help fire up the crowd.

The Mariners will meet the Blue Jays back in Toronto for Game 6 of the ALCS at 5:03 p.m. Sunday.
