The Seattle Mariners created more incredible moments that will live on in team history with their 9-2 win Wednesday night over the Colorado Rockies, which clinched the franchise’s first AL West division championship since 2001.
Those moments will live on with longtime Mariners play-by-play announcer Rick Rizzs‘ calls from the Seattle Sports radio broadcast.
AL West champs! Mariners clinch first division title since 2001
As has been a regular occurrence during Cal Raleigh’s magical 2025 season, and really since the early days of his Mariners career, “The Big Dumper” showed a flair for the dramatic in the win over the Rockies. Not only did the switch-hitting slugger open the game with a solo homer to give Seattle a lead that Colorado would never threaten, but he added a second in the eighth inning – which was his 60th home run of the year.
Mariners star Cal Raleigh joins MLB’s exclusive 60-homer club
Raleigh, who was already the first catcher in history to hit more than 48 in a year and had broken the single season switch-hitter and Mariners team records for homers, is now just the seventh player in MLB history to reach the 60-homer mark.
Rizzs’ call of Raleigh’s 60th featured a great nod to the first person to hit 60 homers: the great “Bambino” himself, Babe Ruth.

“Swing and a drive, deep to right field – there it is, No. 60! The modern day Bambino!” Rizzs exclaimed.
Rizzs, who is in his 40th season as a Mariners broadcaster, had a little more history to call just a few minutes later.
Reliever Luke Jackson recorded the 27th out of the night for the Mariners, striking out Rockies designated hitter Blaine Crim on a slider to clinch the AL West crown.
Here’s how it sounded with Rizzs on the radio:
