Mariners pitching staff delivers their first win in over a week

Every pitcher who had their name called by the Seattle Mariners on Thursday played the role of stopper.

Four Mariners pitchers combined on a shutout at Yankee Stadium, which made a Weston Wilson solo home run stand up in a 1-0 M’s win.

The victory snapped a six-game losing streak that dated back to last Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Logan Gilbert did the lion’s share of the work on the mound Thursday, striking out seven over six innings. He kept New York off the board while working around four hits and a walk over 95 pitches.

The 29-year-old Gilbert lowered his season numbers to a 3.28 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with Thursday’s start.

Eduard Bazardo pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out one while walking a pair of Yankees.

Left-hander José Ferrer had a perfect outing in the eighth inning, and closer Andrés Muñoz shut the door with two strikeouts in a clean ninth inning. Muñoz has converted 11 of his last 12 save opportunities and has allowed just two runs over his last 19 appearances.

The Yankees (68-52) managed just four hits on the day, while the scuffling offense for the Mariners (57-65) had five hits.

Thursday marked the second 1-0 victory for the Mariners this season. They previously beat the Los Angeles Angels 1-0 on July 2.

While the Mariners’ recent swoon has certainly hurt them in the standings, they have a chance to make up ground when they visit the AL West-leading Houston Astros (62-60) in a three-game series that starts at 5:10 p.m. Friday night. The Mariners will enter Friday in third place in the division, five games back of the Astros. They also pulled within 3 1/2 games of a wild card spot with Thursday’s win.
