Rick Rizzs ‘still walking on a cloud’ after Mariners HOF reveal

Rick Rizzs, the longtime radio voice of the Seattle Mariners, will be the next member of the team’s Hall of Fame – news that came as a shock to him when it was announced Saturday by team chairman John Stanton during a ceremony revealing the 50 greatest M’s players as part of the team’s 50 Seasons Celebration at T-Mobile Park.

“I’m still walking on a cloud. I can’t believe it,” Rizzs said Monday afternoon when he joined Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob. “I heard the words from John – I was sitting there and I knew what the program was supposed to be, and he was supposed to be talking about the 50 greatest players in the history of our franchise over the last 50 seasons. And then he came out with that announcement and I was just absolutely floored.”

The setting that the announcement came in added to the moment for Rizzs, who said the “big bear hug” he received from Mariners manager and former catcher Dan Wilson felt like it “came from all 50 guys” who were being honored Saturday night.

“I just appreciate what they did. They made my job so much fun, you know, calling their plays,” Rizzs said. “Randy Johnson’s first no-hitter in our history, Félix (Hernández’s) first perfect game, Edgar (Martinez’s) double, Danny’s inside-the-park grand slam home run one game against the Detroit Tigers in the Kingdome. It just brought back all those memories, and so to share it with those guys and for the (Mariners) Hall of Famers to have a unanimous vote (to vote me in)… it was just amazing.

“Their reaction and the reaction of fans, the ovation, I was just absolutely overwhelmed and floored. It really, it really got to me. It really did. I’m just so appreciative and so humbled.”

Rizzs is in the final months of his 41st and last season on the call for the Mariners, but you’d never know it listening to him on the radio, as host Bob Stelton pointed out.

“You still got your fastball. Are you sure about this?” Stelton asked.

“Yeah. I’m sure about it because I’ve seen guys, you know, older fellas who lost their fastball and I didn’t want to be that guy,” Rizzs said. “I’m 72 and my health is still pretty good. … I’m in pretty good shape and I still want to enjoy my life and spend more time with my grandkids.”
