Mariners OF Luke Raley likely out for the season

Seattle Mariners outfielder Luke Raley is “probably” going to miss the rest of this season with a left forearm strain that landed him on the injured list, general manager Justin Hollander told Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob on Monday.

Raley was placed on the 10-day IL on Saturday.

After injuries derailed his second season in Seattle last year, Raley got off to a hot start this season. At the end of May, he was batting .290 with a .932 OPS and a team-high 13 homers.

But in 41 games since June 1, Raley is batting just .152 with a .441 OPS and two homers.

Raley’s forearm issue dates back until at least late June when three games from June 28 through July 1.

In 95 total games this season, Raley is batting .225 with a .284 on-base percentage, .723 OPS, 15 homers and nine doubles.

The Mariners do have some outfield reinforcements coming in the form of new trade acquisition Taylor Ward, a right-handed hitting corner outfielder. The 32-year-old Ward, who was acquired for the Orioles on Monday for three players, is batting .247 with a .383 on-base percentage, .730 OPS, seven homers and 20 doubles in 111 games this year.

“Adding him to the mix will be really helpful for us,” Hollander said of Ward.

In addition to Ward, the Mariners also acquired minor league outfielder Nolan Jones in a trade that sent starting pitcher Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Jones, who finished fourth in NL Rookie of the year voting in 2023, is a career .247 hitter with a .731 OPS and 30 homers in 349 games over four MLB seasons. He has yet to appear in the majors this year.
