M’s Notebook: Naylor returns, Miller to make another rehab start

SEATTLE – First baseman Josh Naylor is back in the Seattle Mariners’ lineup Saturday night after missing the previous game with shoulder soreness.

Naylor, who the Mariners acquired in a trade with the Diamondbacks, is playing first base and batting fourth against Tampa Bay right-hander Joe Boyle.
Naylor left Thursday’s game after showing discomfort on swings during an at-bat in the third inning. He also dealt with shoulder discomfort earlier this year with Arizona, exiting a June 23 game and missing five of the D-backs’ next seven.
“I think the rest kind of helped and he’s in a good spot,” manager Dan Wilson said pregame. “It was just a day-to-day thing, so he’s back and ready to go.”
Naylor is hitting .261 with a .796 OPS, three home runs and 10 stolen bases in 13 games since joining Seattle. He leads the majors in steals during that stretch with four more than any other player.

Miller to make another rehab start
Wilson confirmed that right-hander Bryce Miller will make at least one more rehab start before rejoining the major league roster, which was the expectation. General Manger Justin Hollander said Tuesday Miller would likely make a third rehab outing before being activated. The club has yet to announce a date for Miller’s next start.
The 26 year old tossed four shutout innings and struck out six during while throwing 52 pitches his first outing with Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 1. He lasted 3 2/3 innings while surrendering four runs and tossing 66 in his second start Thursday. Miller’s fastball velocity touched 97.6 mph in his latest start.
“He feels good,” Wilson said. “I think it’s nice for him to kind of let it fly and feels good to be back on the mound. And it’s great to have him back on the mound and get closer.”
Miller is working his way back from a second stint on injured list with right elbow inflammation. He’s 2-5 with a 5.73 ERA in 10 big league starts this season.
Taylor on taxi squad
Right-handed reliever Troy Taylor was with the team Saturday as a member of the taxi squad.
Taylor, 23, posted a 12.15 ERA while allowing nine runs over 6 2/3 innings in eight big league appearances earlier this season. He has a 6.47 ERA in 32 innings over 35 outings in Triple-A.
Taylor was one of Seattle’s surprising breakout players last year. After starting the year in High-A, he reached the majors in August and had a 3.72 ERA and struck out 25 batters in 19 1/3 innings over 21 appearances.
Top M’s prospect activated, catcher promoted
The High-A Everett AquaSox activated outfielder Jonny Farmelo on Saturday. Seattle’s seventh-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline, is set to bat leadoff and play center field in Everett’s game against the Tri-City Dust Devils.
The 20-year-old Farmelo went on the IL June 3 with a stress reaction in his ribs. A 2023 first-round pick, Farmelo is batting .288 with a .958 OPS and five home runs in 15 game with Everett this season.
Farmelo also missed most of the season’s first month while recovering from a torn ACL suffered last year.
With Farmelo returning to the roster, catcher Freuddy Batista, 25, was promoted to Double-A Arkansas. Batista hit .303 with a .996 OPS, 15 doubles and 12 home runs over 53 games with the AquaSox.
The Mariners continue a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday at 6:4o p.m. Radio coverage begins with the pregame show at 5:30 p.m on Seattle Sports 710 AM and the Seattle Sports app. It will also included Ichiro Suzuki’s number retirement ceremony, which begins at 6 p.m.
