Mariners RHP Brash takes another step forward in rehab

PEIORIA, Ariz. – Check another box for Seattle Mariners right-hander Matt Brash in his recovery and eventual return from the elbow surgery that erased his 2024 season.

On Sunday in Peoria, Brash threw a live batting practice where – unlike the session he threw earlier in the week – the hitters who stepped in were allowed to swing away.

After weeks of closely monitored and regulated sessions of flat-ground work that progressed to sessions off a bullpen mound and eventually to throwing off a field mound to hitters who were to watch only, Brash was able compete.

“No governor today,” said pitching coach Pete Woodworth shortly after. “Go get Vic, go get Mastro.”

Brash faced Victor Robles and Miles Mastrobuoni in an inning of work where both had two plate appearances. Robles came out swinging, coming up empty on a first pitch slider from Brash – who mixed in all of his pitches.

Only two balls were put in play, neither which would be recorded as hits. It wasn’t full force Brash quite yet as he’s not fully built up, but he is getting closer having climbed consistently in intensity and velocity since he first touched the mound in his rehab.

“It was a really good first outing,” said Woodworth, pointing out most are more adventuresome. “Everything was competitive. Everything was competitive over the plate. He’s gotten really comfortable with his two-seamer. His slider command, it’s not easy to command that pitch, but every single one of them was exactly where you want them to be. It was awesome.”

What next remains to be seen, but Sunday another significant step towards return was made by Brash.
