Mariners’ Logan Gilbert puts pressure on radio hosts making predictions

Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk are plenty used to making predictions on the air about the Seattle Mariners. But it’s a different situation entirely when you have to make a prediction about a specific player while the player himself is watching from mere feet away.

What we learned from Mariners’ Brendan Donovan

That was the case Monday at the team’s spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz., as Logan Gilbert just happened to be walking past Brock and Salk’s broadcasting setup while they were going through an Over/Under segment regarding Mariners projections for the upcoming season.

At first, Gilbert chimed in by saying he’d take the over on Randy Arozarena stealing 25 bases. Then Mike Salk put his co-host Brock Huard and Mariners insider Shannon Drayer on the spot.

“For the record, I do have Logan Gilbert ERA on here. Anybody daring enough to answer it while Logan’s here?” Salk asked.

Salk then brought up a projection of a 3.20 ERA for Gilbert in 2026, which is when it appeared that the lanky right-hander was misunderstanding the segment, immediately pointing his finger upwards. Gilbert quickly changed his tune after it was explained that the question wasn’t trivia about last season’s stats (Gilbert had a 3.44 ERA in 2025).

“Oh, they better say under,” Gilbert responded.

By the way, if you don’t think that number was really putting Huard and Drayer on the spot with Gilbert watching closely, just know that Gilbert’s career-best ERA was exactly 3.20 in 2023. In fact, he was even a bit over that (3.23) during his 2024 All-Star campaign.

Huard deftly avoided answering the tough question. First, he tried to change the direction of the conversation to Gilbert recently becoming a father for the first time. And then when that didn’t take, Huard started bringing up his home/road splits. In fact, Salk was the only one to make any kind of prediction, and even though he didn’t do so until Gilbert was out of earshot, he gave the prediction that Gilbert was expecting – and even upped the ante.

“Legitimately – he’s now walked away – I’m going to take the under,” Salk said. “Logan just didn’t have a great year last year. Just wasn’t fully him. I don’t know if some of it was the health stuff he went through or whatever. Here’s my prediction, this has no basis in anything I’ve been told: Logan Gilbert signs a (contract extension) before the year begins, a la Cal Raleigh last year, and comes out and shoves for the entire year and has an ERA closer to 3.00 than he did last year. That’s my prediction. I think Logan’s gonna have a really good year.”

Maybe the discussion gave Gilbert a little extra motivation Monday. He made his 2026 Cactus League debut, starting against the Dodgers and making it though two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Brock and Salk, which airs from 6-10 a.m. weekdays on Seattle Sports 710 AM and the Seattle Sports app, will be live from Mariners spring training all this week.
