So what stands out?
We’ve got a first opening day start for a pair of players: pitcher Logan Gilbert, which we knew about, and 25-year-old second baseman Ryan Bliss, which wasn’t 100% for sure going into the day.
Rowdy Tellez gets the nod at first base after joining the team on a minor league contract and impressing enough in spring training to earn a spot on the big league roster. With Tellez in the field, lefty-swinging slugger Luke Raley will be the designated hitter.
Raley gets the start at DH against A’s right-hander Luis Severino instead of backup catcher Mitch Garver, who will be available off the bench with veteran infielder Donovan Solano and utility men Dylan Moore and Miles Mastrobuoni.
A sign of the depth the Mariners lineup has compared to last year can be seen by where some hitters are in the lineup. Last year’s opening day leadoff hitter, shortstop J.P. Crawford, is at the bottom of the order, while Jorge Polanco (now at his new position of third base) is hitting sixth as opposed to No. 3 in the 2024 opener.
The Mariners’ top four hitters in the lineup seem to be pretty set based on what manager Dan Wilson wrote out both Thursday and late in spring training. Victor Robles is the leadoff man, Julio Rodríguez is the No. 2 hitter, and the newly extended Cal Raleigh – a switch-hitter – is third ahead of cleanup man Randy Arozarena, most likely to break up the three righty-hitting outfielders in the order.
Why Randy Arozarena is ‘enormous’ X-factor for Mariners
Full coverage of Thursday’s game will air on Seattle Sports 710 AM, the flagship station of the Mariners Radio Network, beginning at 6 p.m. with the pregame show hosted by insider Shannon Drayer. Rick Rizzs, longtime voice of the Mariners, will be the lead broadcaster on game coverage, and he will be joined by new full-time Mariners play-by-play announcer Gary Hill Jr.
