Seattle Mariners Lineup: A new DH for opener in Kansas City

The AL West-leading Seattle Mariners are set for the first game of a their final six-game road trip of the season.

Seattle has released its lineup for the opener against the Kansas City Royals at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, and it features Dominic Canzone getting his first start of the year as the Mariners’ designated hitter.

Canzone, who typically plays right field, will hit seventh in the batting order, one spot ahead of Victor Robles, who will instead be in right. Jorge Polanco, who has started 88 games as the DH for the Mariners this year, will play second base.

The 28-year-old Canzone is coming off a 3-for-5 performance with a double and three RBIs in the Mariners’ 11-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. That victory pushed Seattle’s season-high winning streak to nine games.

In 71 games this year, Canzone owns a .287/.349/.435 slash line for a .785 OPS with seven home runs and 10 doubles.

The inclusion of Canzone gives the Mariners five hitters who will swing from the left side (including switch-hitters) in their lineup against Royals right-handed starting pitcher Michael Wacha (9-11, 3.45 ERA).

Robles began the year as the Mariners’ leadoff man and starting right fielder but missed over four months due to injury. He also served a seven-game suspension shortly after his return from the injured list. The 28 year old has been solid since coming off the IL, hitting .282 with a pair of stolen bases and keying a few multi-run rallies.

Logan Gilbert (4-6, 3.54 ERA) will make the start on the mound for the Mariners. He allowed just one run on five hits, a walk and a hit batter with eight strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in his last outing on Sept. 10 against the St. Louis Cardinals. He made it through six innings in each of his previous three starts.

The Mariners enter play Tuesday with a half-game lead over the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West.
