Seattle Mariners don’t lose veteran utility man after DFA

The Seattle Mariners will continue to have the versatile Miles Mastrobuoni as a depth option at their disposal.

The 30-year-old Mastrobuoni cleared waivers and has been outrighted to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers after being designated for assignment in order to be moved off of both the 40-man roster and active 26-man roster last week.

While Mastrobuoni is out of minor league options, he did not have the ability to reject his outright assignment due to being short of three years of MLB service time and not having been previously outrighted in his career.

The Mariners designated Mastrobuoni for assignment on June 19, calling up the recently signed veteran Weston Wilson from Tacoma in his place. Mastrobuoni hits from the left side, as does much of Seattle’s roster, whereas Wilson is a right-handed hitter.

Mastrobuoni has spent the majority of this season on the injured list after suffering a calf strain while playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic in March. He played a full month on a minor league rehab assignment with Tacoma, then rejoined the Mariners in mid-June, playing eight games while appearing at first base, second base, third base and left field for Seattle. He went 5 for 23 (.217) at the plate in his short time back up with Seattle.

Last year, the 5-foot-9 Mastrobuoni slashed .250/.324/.296 for a .620 OPS with one homer and four doubles in career-high 76 games with the M’s. Prior to coming to Seattle, he played eight games with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022 and a combined 110 games for the Chicago Cubs between 2023 and 2024.

Mastrobuoni, who has not seen game action since June 18, could return to the field when Tacoma hosts the Round Rock Express at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Cheney Stadium.

As for the Mariners (41-41), they will open a three-game series in Cleveland (42-39) at 4:10 p.m. Friday in a battle between the AL West leaders and one of the two teams tied atop the AL Central. Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports begins at 3 p.m. with the pregame show.
