Mariners’ Kade Anderson exits game after taking line drive to pitching arm

Seattle Mariners rookie Kade Anderson said he will be fine after taking a 103.8-mph line drive off his left forearm during Saturday night’s 8-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Anderson was struck by a liner off the bat of Los Angeles Angels second baseman Christian Moore in the top of the fourth inning. The left-hander looked to be in immediate pain and grabbed at his left arm before attempting to waive off help, but he was pulled from the game with a left forearm bruise after a meeting with manager Dan Wilson and a team trainer.

“I knew nothing (with the) bone was wrong,” Anderson told reports postgame. “I think it was more of like, I couldn’t grip anything. It was like my arm went dead. It was frustrating because I knew I wouldn’t be able to continue.

Anderson said the ball hit the top of his forearm.

“It got me pretty good,” he said.

Anderson finished with a final line of no runs allowed on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. He left with a 1-0 lead.

“I thought that he had started out throwing the ball very well. Kind of continuing to pick up where he left off, and that’s a tough break,” Wilson said.

The first-round pick was coming off pitching seven shutout innings against the Colorado Rockies last Sunday.

Anderson, ranked as the top pitching prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, will finish his first season in the majors with a 2-2 record and 3.79 ERA over 35 2/3 innings in seven starts.
