Mariners’ Colt Emerson homers again vs Nationals

The impressive start to Seattle Mariners rookie Colt Emerson’s major league career continued with another big swing Saturday at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.

With the Mariners trailing 3-1 in the fifth inning, Emerson launched a game-tying, two-run home run off Nationals right-hander Cade Cavalli for his sixth career home run and second in as many days.

The 20-year-old Emerson fell behind 0-2 with two outs in the inning before turning around on a well-placed 97.9-mph fastball on the inside corner at the top of the zone for a 386-foot blast into the second deck in right field.

Emerson also hit a two-run home run to right field on Friday night. Saturday’s homer marked the first time he hit homers in consecutive games during his big league career. He also joined Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez as the only Mariners to homer in consecutive games at 20 years old or younger, per MLB.com’s Sarah Langs. Emerson has four home runs in 10 games this month.

Emerson’s six home runs since being called up to the majors on May 17 are tied with Dominic Canzone and Julio Rodríguez. He’s batting .233 with a .575 slugging percentage and .884 OPS.

Unfortunately for the Mariners, the Nationals got both runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homer by Luis Garcia Jr. and scored the game’s final five runs on their way to a series-evening 8-3 win.
