Mariners catchers provide more pop in victory over Mets

The Seattle Mariners have gotten a surprising amount of offensive production from their catchers while Cal Raleigh has been out.

Jhonny Pereda added to it with a big swing that broke the game open and helped the M’s beat the New York Mets 8-3 on Tuesday night.

The victory improved Seattle’s season-best win streak to eight games and its record to 34-29.

With two on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Pereda connected on a 2-2 cutter on the inside corner from right-hander Jonah Tong and launched a 388-foot, three-run homer into the visitors bullpen in left field for a 7-2 lead.

It was Pereda’s second home run this season and second of his career, both of which have come since Raleigh was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain May 14.

The 30-year-old catcher finished the night 2 for 5 at the plate, raising his batting average to .263 and OPS to .754 in 12 games with Seattle. His three RBIs marked the first multi-RBI game of his big league career.

Entering Tuesday, Mariners catchers were seventh in MLB with a .400 slugging percentage and 106 wRC+, and eighth with a .706 OPS, since Raleigh went on the IL. With Pereda’s performance on Tuesday night added in, he and Garver have combined for four homers and nine RBIs during the stretch. They’ve also scored 11 runs.

Logan Gilbert struck out eight over 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk, to earn the win for the Mariners on Tuesday night, his fourth of the season.

The series finale between the M’s and Mets will be at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports starting at noon with the pregame show.
