Mariners calling up prospect Cole Young, per reports

The Seattle Mariners are reportedly turning to their cache of highly-ranked prospects to help them after falling out of first place in the AL West.

Daniel Kramer, who covers the Mariners for MLB.com, reported Friday night that Seattle will call up 21-year-old shortstop Cole Young from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers this weekend, according to a “source with knowledge of the club’s plans.”

Adam Jude of The Seattle Times added shortly after that Young is expected to be in the Mariners’ lineup in Saturday’s 4:15 p.m. game against the Minnesota Twins.

Young, the No. 21 overall pick in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Mariners, is the No. 43 overall prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, making him the third of Seattle’s MLB-leading nine prospects in the top 100.

Though he got off to a rough start in Triple-A this year, he caught fire in May, which earned him Pacific Coast League Player of the Week honors for the week of May 5-11 along the way. On Wednesday night, Young recorded a five-hit game in a Rainiers win over the Salt Lake Bees at Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium, ramping up speculation that he could be on his way to Seattle soon.

Young was pulled from Tacoma’s game Friday night before the fourth inning, signaling that he was likely on his way to the big leagues.

This season, Young has a .277/.392/.461 slash line for an .853 OPS in 54 games with the Rainiers. He has five home runs, five triples, 13 doubles, four stolen bases, 39 runs scored and 31 walks to just 28 strikeouts.

In May alone, Young has a .366/.467/.674 slash for a 1.141 OPS with all five of his homers, 10 doubles, three triples, and twice as many walks (16) as strikeouts (eight).

While Young was drafted as a shortstop, he has seen the majority of his playing time this year at second base, which figures to be where the M’s will play him upon his promotion.

The Mariners have another former first-round pick potentially knocking on the door of the big leagues in Tacoma with 22-year-old catcher Harry Ford, who has a .325/.435/.487 slash line for a .922 OPS with six homers and seven doubles in 40 games with the Rainiers.

The Mariners gave up at least six runs in extra innings for the second night in a row Friday and lost 12-6 to the Twins. With the defeat, Seattle fell a half-game behind the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West.
