Mariners debut coming soon? Cole Young records 5-hit game

Seattle Mariners prospect Cole Young has made himself quite the hot topic this season, to the point that Seattle Sports’ Mike Salk wondered on Tuesday if this week was a good time for him to get the call up from Triple-A Tacoma and make his MLB debut.

After Young’s performance with the Rainiers on Wednesday night, that speculation is only going to intensify.

The 21-year-old middle infielder had the biggest night of his pro career with a five-hit game, going 5 for 6 in a 19-8 Rainiers rout of the Salt Lake Bees at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

Young doubled twice, scored twice, drove in a pair of runs and stole a base in the win. Here’s video of all five of his hits:

Young showed off his well-rounded game on Wednesday, with two of the lefty swinger’s hits coming against a left-handed pitcher, and his strongest hit of the night being an opposite-field double off the wall.

The No. 21 overall pick in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Mariners, Young is the No. 43 overall prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, making him the third of Seattle’s MLB-leading nine prospects in the top 100. Of those nine M’s prospects in the top 100, Young and his Rainiers teammate, catcher Harry Ford (No. 67 overall), are the closest to the big leagues. The rest of the M’s prospects on the list are either with the High-A Everett AquaSox or Single-A Modesto Nuts.

Young made his Triple-A debut at the beginning of the season, and it was a slow start in the Pacific Coast League for him. But the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Young has caught fire over his last 22 games, hitting .409 (36 for 88) with five home runs, 10 doubles, three triples, four stolen bases, and 12 walks to just seven strikeouts since May 3. Along the way, he won PCL Player of the Week honors for May 5-11.

On the season, Young has a slash line of .277/.384/.465 for a .849 OPS in 52 games.

Young, who went pro out of North Allegheny High School in Wexford, Penn., has split his playing time between second base and shortstop with the Rainiers. The Mariners have J.P. Crawford solidified as their starting shortstop, but second base is much less settled. Since losing Ryan Bliss to the injured list in April, the Mariners have relied on Dylan Moore (18 starts), Leo Rivas (15 starts) and Miles Mastrobuoni (nine starts) at second.

The Rainiers play the third game of a six-game home series against Salt Lake (the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate) at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, and will be home next week for another six-game series against the Las Vegas Aviators (Athletics affiliate) that begins Tuesday.

The Mariners wrap up a three-game set against the Washington Nationals at T-Mobile Park at 6:40 p.m. Thursday night, with radio coverage on Seattle Sports starting at 5:30 with the pregame show. Seattle’s homestand will continue with three games against Minnesota from Friday-Sunday, then three games next Tuesday-Thursday against Baltimore.
