Cal Raleigh is the first to 40.
The Seattle Mariners star catcher continued his historic season by hitting his MLB-leading 40th home run in the sixth inning of Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Batting from the left side, the switch-hitting Raleigh jumped on a 2-0 fastball from reliever José Fermin and pulled a go-ahead, 416-foot solo shot over the right-field fence at Angel Stadium. It registered a 113.5 mph exit velocity and kickstarted a four-run inning for Seattle.
Raleigh’s latest blast made him both the first catcher and first switch-hitter in major league history to reach 40 homers before the end of July. He’s just the 12th player in MLB history with 40 homers through a team’s first 105 games, according to Stathead.
Raleigh became the fifth different player in Mariners history to reach the 40-homer mark in a season. He joins Ken Griffey Jr. (six times), Jay Buhner (three times), Alex Rodriguez (three times) and Nelson Cruz (three times).
Raleigh also became just the seventh different catcher in MLB history to reach 40 homers in a season. The MLB single-season record for a catcher is 48, set by Kansas City Royals slugger Salvador Perez in 2021. Raleigh is on pace for 61.
It’s all part of a sensational campaign for the 28-year-old Raleigh, who hit an American League-record 38 homers before the All-Star break.
Raleigh is two homers ahead of Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, who moved back to second in the majors with his 38 homer on Saturday night.
New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge is third with 37 homers, but is headed to the 10-day injured list with a flexor strain in his right elbow. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez and Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber are tied for fourth with 36.
