Seattle Mariners Updates: Latest on Bryan Woo; next 2 starters set

There’s a bit more clarity on the state of the Seattle Mariners’ pitching staff now that they’re a game into the ALCS against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bryce Miller certainly helped, giving Seattle a stellar six-inning outing in their Game 1 win on short rest and just two days after the Mariners had to cover 15 innings in Game 5 of the ALDS.

And then just hours before the 2:03 p.m. first pitch of Game 2 of the ALCS, the Mariners announced their starters for Game 3 Wednesday and Game 4 Thursday when the series shifts back to Seattle’s T-Mobile Park.

Game 3 for the M’s will belong to George Kirby, who started Seattle’s ALDS-clinching win over the Detroit Tigers last Friday. Game 4 will be started by Luis Castillo, who earned the win in last Friday’s game by throwing the final 1 1/3 innings for Seattle in his first MLB relief appearance.

As for a potential Game 5 this Friday in Seattle, the possibility remains open for 2025 All-Star Bryan Woo to make his postseason debut. He hasn’t pitched since leaving a Sept. 19 start in Houston early with right pectoral inflammation, but he was included on the ALCS roster and threw a live batting practice from the mound at Toronto’s Rogers Centre before Monday’s game.

“It felt good. It felt good to get back out and be on a good mound again, so, you know, all positives,” Woo said to reporters after his throwing session. “… I was able to treat it like real at-bats, mix everything, kind of sequence and everything like I wanted to. So yeah, all good.”

Mariners manager Dan Wilson said in a pregame press conference that Woo remains in play to potentially pitch in the ALCS.

“I thought it went really well today,” Wilson said. “Looking at different things in terms of his velo and in terms of how he was throwing his secondary stuff, it looked all really pretty solid today. The next sort of check mark is how he responds to that tomorrow and how he comes back.

“His progression has been pretty steady, pretty on the mark, and I think if he comes back tomorrow and feeling better, then I think we’re in a good path to seeing him later in the series.”

Logan Gilbert, another usual starter who came out of the bullpen to pitch multiple innings in the ALDS clincher, is Seattle’s scheduled starter for Game 2 of the ALCS on Monday. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at noon with an extended pregame. The TV broadcast will be on FOX.
