Matt Brash is officially back.
The Seattle Mariners activated the hard-throwing reliever from the injured list on Saturday, marking his long-awaited return to the MLB roster after undergoing Tommy John surgery last May. The move comes after Brash made six rehab appearances in Triple-A Tacoma, including two in a three-day span last week.
Why 2 MLB insiders are bullish on Mariners’ October hopes
Brash missed all of last season after suffering a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. It was a major blow to Seattle’s bullpen, as the 26-year-old right-hander had established himself as a key high-leverage arm. Brash made his MLB debut in 2022 and had a standout 2023 campaign, posting a 3.06 ERA with 107 strikeouts over 70 2/3 innings.
Brash initially returned to action with a brief appearance in the Mariners’ Cactus League finale on March 24. He began his rehab stint with Triple-A Tacoma on April 13 and pitched 5 1/3 innings over six relief appearances for the Rainiers. He allowed five earned runs and nine hits with Tacoma, while totaling five strikeouts and two walks.
Brash last pitched for the Mariners on Sept. 30, 2023, in the penultimate game of that season.
In a corresponding move, Seattle optioned right-handed reliever Troy Taylor to Triple-A Tacoma.
The red-hot Mariners face the Texas Rangers at 4:05 p.m. Saturday in Arlington, Texas, for the second game of a three-game set. Seattle is atop the American League West at 19-12, having won five straight games and 15 of its past 19. The Mariners have the second-best record in the AL, behind the Detroit Tigers.
