The Seattle Mariners have their first series win of the 2025 season, and it came in dramatic fashion.
Seattle came back from a five-run deficit to beat the Houston Astros 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon, with Randy Arozarena and Julio Rodríguez both delivering big at-bats.
Seattle Mariners 7, Houston Astros 6: Recap | Box score
First, Arozarena crushed a two-out grand slam in the eighth inning to cut Houston’s lead to 5-4. That came after three straight walks by the Mariners to open the inning, followed by back-to-back outs.
The Astros got a run back in the top of the ninth inning, but the Mariners immediately started another rally with their backs against the wall in the bottom of the frame.
Donovan Solano and Miles Mastrobuoni singled, and J.P. Crawford hit a shot to third that ultimately was deemed a fielder’s choice after a replay review overturned a call that Solano had been tagged out. That loaded the bases for a second straight inning, and Rodríguez came through by lining a double to right field to plate a pair of runs and tie the game at 6-6.
Mitch Garver then walked to load the bases again, and while Cal Raleigh next hit a grounder to first, the Astros could only get the out at home, giving Arozarena one more chance to end it.
And that he did.
Arozarena saw six pitches from Astros reliever Bryan Abreu, going to a full count before watching ball four come in just a bit too high, forcing in the winning run for a walk-off walk.
The Mariners improve to 5-8 on the season with the win. They have Thursday off, then begin a three-game series at home at 6:40 p.m. Friday against the Texas Rangers. Radio coverage will begin on Seattle Sports with Wyman and Bob live from Edgar’s Cantina at T-Mobile Park at 2 p.m., then the 5:30 p.m. pregame show.
