Puyallup/Spokane product Drew Rasmussen named MLB All-Star

There’s another Washington state native who will take part in the MLB All-Star Game next week, as Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen was added to the American League roster Friday.

Rasmussen was born in Puyallup and attended Mount Spokane High School. He joins a pair of National League players as 2025 All-Stars from Washington: Cubs left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd (Mercer Island, Eastside Catholic) and Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll (Seattle, Lakeside).

Like Boyd, Rasmussen is a first-time All-Star who pitched in college at Oregon State.

A first-round MLB Draft pick by the Rays in 2017, Rasmussen did not sign and was drafted again in 2018 in the sixth round by Milwaukee after undergoing Tommy John surgery for a second time. The Rays eventually got Rasmussen in a 2021 trade.

The 29-year-old Rasmussen owns a 2.82 ERA and 1.007 WHIP in 18 starts this season. Over 89 1/3 innings, he has 76 strikeouts to 21 walks.

Rasmussen has finished each of the previous three seasons with an ERA under 3.00.

On the AL roster, Rasmussen takes the place of former Seattle Mariners left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, a second-time All-Star and the lone representative for the Los Angeles Angels. Kikuchi, who coincidentally was the Mariners’ lone All-Star in 2021 but opted not to pitch in the game, is set to start Saturday for the Angels, ruling him out for pitching Tuesday in Atlanta.
