New dad J.P. Crawford hits Father’s Day grand slam

SEATTLE – J.P. Crawford’s first Father’s Day as a dad will be one the shortstop will surely remember.

Crawford showed of his new “dad strength” on Sunday, belting a grand slam into the seats in right field to put the Seattle Mariners up 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning against the Cleveland Guardians. And he did with a bat that had his daughter’s name inscribed on it.

Crawford turned on a slider from Cleveland starter Luis Ortiz that was on the bottom line of the strike zone in a 1-2 count for the grand slam. It traveled 376 feet and came off the bat at 99 mph.

Crawford’s grand slam was set up in large part by the bottom half of the lineup. After Randy Arozarena led off the inning with a walk, Rowdy Tellez doubled to put runners on second and third. Dominic Canzone worked an eight-pitch walk two batters later, and Miles Mastrobuoni put the M’s up 1-0 with a soft line-drive single that fell just in front of Cleveland right fielder Nolan Jones.

The Mariners went on to win the game 6-0 to earn a three-game series sweep.

The home run was Crawford’s sixth this season, brought his RBI total up to 29 and continued what’s been a red-hot run by the 2020 AL Gold Glove winner.

Crawford was coming off a 3-for-3 performance the night before in which he reached base in all five plate appearances with three of singles and two walks. That was Crawford’s second straight three-hit game and his ninth multi-hit game in 14 contests since May 30.

Entering Sunday, Crawford led the league with a .538 on-base percentage and was second with a .444 batting average since May 30, trailing only Athletics rookie shortstop Jacob Wilson. Crawford’s 230 wRC+ during the stretch was also seventh in the majors.

The grand slam improved Crawford’s overall season slash line to .297/.411/.414. His .411 on-base percentage is tied for fourth in the majors and trails only Yankees slugger Aaron Judge in the American League.
