M’s notebook: Ackley’s ankle will be managed for rest of year

Dustin Ackley felt discomfort in his troublesome left ankle while hitting Friday night and is out of the lineup tonight. There have been conflicting reports of whether or not the discomfort Ackley has been suffering is a result of the bone spurs he has had in the past. I have been told that this is unrelated to the bone spurs.

Ackley is dealing with inflammation in the ankle and it most likely will take a couple of days to settle down. The good news is Ackley says the ankle has felt better with each passing day, including yesterday. The concerning news is that while it will not require surgery it most likely will not heal fully until the offseason. With treatment and whatever rest is possible at this point of the season, the condition can be managed and the hope is Ackley won’t miss more than another day or two.

Notes

• Felix Hernandez is making his 300th career start and will do so in front of a sold-out Safeco Field. The announcement was made at 4 p.m. that the game against Oakland was indeed a sellout. Good tickets remain for Sunday’s game.

• Michael Saunders is getting the night off tonight after returning from the disabled list. Manager Lloyd McClendon saw signs Friday that he might need a break.

“He looked a little sluggish with his legs,” McClendon said.

• Kyle Seager made an incredible play in the fourth inning last night that I had a hard time describing on Twitter. The dive and the stop, no problem, but the feed to second? I ended up going with long-distance flip. Shovel pass, option flip, backhand flip all were suggested. I asked Kyle today how he would describe it and he answered with a laugh, “Desperation.” He then said that with the pitcher running he knew he had a chance to make the attempt. Although he liked the “option flip” suggestion, he said the throw to him felt more like a feed to second base. Great play, whatever it was.
