Mariners place Bryce Miller on IL, recall Logan Evans

The Seattle Mariners are placing starting pitcher Bryce Miller on the injured list once again with right elbow inflammation, manager Dan Wilson told reporters after Monday night’s 8-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The club is recalling up right-hander Logan Evans from Triple-A Tacoma to make the start Tuesday in Arizona. The next outing for Bryan Woo, who was slated to start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, has been pushed to Wednesday.

An official roster move was made Tuesday morning.

Miller has been slowed this season by elbow issues in his pitching arm and spent a brief stint on the injured list in May with elbow inflammation. The right-hander returned after nearly three weeks on the IL May 31.

“It’s the same issues as he had the last time,” Wilson said. “Cortisone shot wasn’t as helpful as we had hoped.”

A timetable for Miller’s recovery has not been given.

Miller allowed eight runs over nine innings in two starts since returning from the IL. Those struggles added on to what’s been a difficult third big league season for the 26-year-old right-hander. Miller hasn’t reached six innings or recorded a quality start in his 10 outings.

When Miller was first placed on the IL May 14, he said the elbow issue he’s dealing with started last season.

“It’s been something that, I’ve mentioned it a few times, but just been kind of lingering and kind of started really the back half of last year and kind of led through the offseason,” Miller said at the time.

The elbow issue didn’t seem to have the same impact in 2024. From Aug. 9 on, he was second in the majors with a 1.34 ERA over nine starts.

General manager Justin Hollander told Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy last month Miller’s issue is on the back of his elbow, not the front where the UCL – which is what Tommy John surgery repairs – would be a concern.

Miller joins Logan Gilbert as starters on the IL for the Mariners. Gilbert is scheduled to make a rehab start with Tacoma on Tuesday and could potentially return to the majors afterwards.

Evans, 24, impressed during his first stint with the Mariners earlier this season. The rookie right-hander posted a 3-1 record and 2.83 ERA over 35 innings in six starts. Evans was sent down after his best big league outing, allowing only one run on four hits over eight innings against the Washington Nationals on May 27.

Evans is the Mariners’ No. 10 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He was with the team in Arizona on Monday as a member of the taxi squad.
