Canzone’s game-tying home run caps wild Mariners rally vs D-backs

Down to his team’s final strike in his first game since being recalled from the minor leagues, Canzone blasted a game-tying two-run home run into seats in the right field to cap an improbable four-run Mariners rally in top of the ninth inning Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks – Canzone’s former team.

It took a little luck for the Mariners and misfortunate for the Diamondbacks for it to happen.

Arizona closer Justin Martinez had the Mariners down to their final out with a runner on second base trailing 4-0, but abruptly left the game after calling for trainers in a 1-1 count to Donovan Solano. Jeff Brigham came in and Solano and Cole Young extended the rally with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 4-2.

That set up Canzone. The slugging left-handed hitter worked the count full after falling behind 1-2 and unloaded on a 96 mph fastball on the insider part of the plate for 449-foot home run that came off the bat at 115.9 mph.

Canzone ended up playing hero on a night where he wasn’t even in the starting lineup. The 27 year old came in as a pinch-hitter for Ben Williamson in the seventh inning and grounded out on the first pitch he saw to end the inning.

Canzone’s feel-good moment ended up being a footnote by the end of the night after Josh Naylor won it for Arizona with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 11th for an 8-4 Diamondbacks win.

The Mariners acquired Canzone, Ryan Bliss and Josh Rojas from the Diamondbacks prior to the 2023 trade deadline for closer Paul Sewald. Canzone has bounced between the majors and minors in his three seasons with Seattle. He played a career-high 67 games and hit .196 with eight home runs last season.

Canzone spent a brief stint in the majors in April and went 0 for 3 while appearing in two games. In 45 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, he hit .296 with a .924 OPS and 13 home runs.
