Mariners sign reliever Rafael Perez to a minor-league contract

The Mariners have added to their spring-training supply of left-handed pitchers by signing veteran Rafael Perez to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training.

Perez, 32, pitched seven seasons for the Indians and made 338 appearances, all in relief. He has spent the past two seasons pitching in the minors and Mexico and most recently pitched for the Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League and Caribbean Series. In 15 regular-season games (six starts) for the Gigantes, he posted a 2.31 ERA and was 3-1 with a 0.84 ERA in six playoff starts.

The Mariners now have seven left-handed relievers in camp to compete most likely for two spots in the bullpen. Five of the seven, including Rule-5 pick David Rollins, are on the 40-man roster.

With the addition, the Mariners’ spring-training roster is now at 59. That includes 28 pitchers, seven catchers, 12 infielders and 12 outfielders. The 40-man roster is at 40 and a move will have to be made to add Rickie Weeks once he passes his physical.
