Mariners’ Robinson Cano named American League Player of the Week

After hitting better than .500 and smacking four home runs over the past seven games, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Robinson Cano was named the American League Player of the Week for May 2-8. It’s the first of such honors for Cano this season, but the seventh time Cano has received the designation in his career. The lefty slugger previously won the award in 2012, 2010 (twice), 2007 (twice) and 2005 with the Yankees.

In seven games against the Athletics and Astros, Canó hit .516 (16 for 31) with eight runs, three doubles, four home runs, nine RBI and a 1.516 OPS. He recorded a hit in each of the games and tallied five multi-hit games.

For the season, the second baseman is batting .305 while leading the MLB in RBI’s and is tied for the league lead in home runs with Colorado’s Nolan Arenado.
