Mariners place OF Randy Arozarena on 10-day injured list

SEATTLE – Just as the Seattle Mariners got two key players back, they lost another to the injured list.

The Mariners placed left fielder Randy Arozarena on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain on Tuesday (retroactive to Saturday) less than one hour before their series opener against the Baltimore Orioles at T-Mobile Park.

In a corresponding move, the M’s selected the contract of outfielder Curtis Washington Jr. from the High-A Everett AquaSox, who were scheduled to play at nearby at Funko Field in Everett on Tuesday night. Seattle also moved infielder Will Wilson (fractured left thumb) to the 60-day injured list to make room for Washington on the 40-man roster.

The Seattle Times’ Adam Jude reported outfielder Connor Joe was scratched from Triple-A Tacoma’s lineup Tuesday night and is expected to join the Mariners’ 26-man roster on Wednesday. The Rainiers were playing on the road against the Salt Lake Bees.

Arozarena was injured Friday night when he tried to leg out a grounder and landed awkwardly on first base during the third inning against the Washington Nationals. He was initially deemed day to day and missed the final two games of the series against the Nationals.

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander on Tuesday said Arozarena was to undergo MRI on his hamstring before their series opener against the Orioles.

Arozarena’s addition to the injured list came on the same day Seattle activated Cal Raleigh and J.P. Crawford from the IL.

Arozarena has been arguably the Mariners’ best full-time position player this season, leading the team in batting average (.291), hits (76), runs scored (47), doubles (18), stolen bases (19) and bWAR (2.6). He has an .826 OPS and seven homers in 71 games this season.

Washington, 26, is batting .190 with a .674 OPS and seven homers in 44 games with Everett this season. He was a 19th-round pick out of Purdue during the 2022 MLB Draft.

Joe, 33, appeared in 18 games for the M’s earlier this season, batting .182 with a .641 OPS and one homer.
