Mariners announce Kyle Seager’s seven-year extension

The Mariners have announced the signing of third baseman Kyle Seager to a long-term contract extension. Seager is signed through the 2021 season and there is a club option for the 2022 season.

“I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity that the Seattle Mariners have given me,” Seager said in the club’s press release. “This is an amazing honor for me and my family to remain with such a great organization for the foreseeable future.”

The extension comes on the heels of Seager’s best professional season. In addition to winning the Gold Glove Award and being selected to the All-Star team for the first time, he led the Mariners in home runs (25), RBIs (96) and extra-base hits (56).

“This is a great day for the Seattle Mariners, our fans and the Seager family. As one of our homegrown players it is nice to know that he will remain with us for at least seven more seasons,” general manager Jack Zduriencik said in the release. “Kyle has taken a step forward each season since joining the organization in 2009, and has turned into one of the premier third baseman in the game. He has exhibited class both on and off the field and is someone we are all extremely proud of. We are very pleased to announce this joint commitment by the Seattle Mariners and Kyle Seager as we strive toward our goal of winning a World Championship.”

Terms of the contract were not announced per club policy, but Tim Dierkes of MLBTraderumors.com Tweeted the details of Seager’s back-loaded, seven-year deal.

• 2015: $4 million
• 2016: $7 million
• 2017: $10.5 million
• 2018: $18.5 million
• 2019: $19 million
• 2020: $19 million
• 2021: $18 million

The club option in 2022 is from $15 to $20 million and performance based. The buyout is variable and ranges from $0 to $3 million.

Seager talked about his extension when he joined 710 ESPN Seattle’s “Brock and Salk” Wednesday morning. The Mariners’ press conference will be held at 2 p.m.
