When Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez’s baseball career is over, he may have a future as a magician. That was evident when he fooled Mariners play-by-play voice Rick Rizzs with another highlight-reel grab on the first batter of Wednesday’s game against the New York Yankees.

Rodríguez showed off his athleticism, leaping high off the ground to snatch what would have been a leadoff home run from Yankees center fielder Trent Grisham from over the fence. It was tough to tell if Rodríguez actually made the play live. He paused for a moment and thrust his fist forward in what could have been celebration or frustration. It turned out to be the former, as he revealed the ball after Grisham had already rounded second base.
“Julio, you got me!” Rizzs exclaimed on the 710 AM Seattle Sports broadcast.
Here’s video with Rizzs’ call from the Seattle Sports radio broadcast:

It’s not the first time Rodríguez has shown some foolery in the outfield on a home run robbery. He famously did the same thing to San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. in 2023.
The No Fly Zone has been in full effect during the first inning of back-to-back games. On Tuesday, Rodríguez made a stellar sliding grab on the warning track to rob Aaron Judge of extra bases on the second at-bat of the game, which proved to be a run-saving play when Cody Bellinger doubled in the next at-bat.
Rodríguez has been one of the game’s best defensive center fielders since he debuted during the 2022 season, but he hasn’t won a Gold Glove yet. After another standout play, he’s starting to make an early case for his first piece of defensive hardware. He entered Wednesday tied for second among American League center fielders at plus-five outs above average and plus-four runs prevented, per Baseball Savant.
