Julio Rodríguez added to M’s Alumni HR Derby – as DJ

There’s a big new addition to the Seattle Mariners’ Alumni Home Run Derby set for next Friday, Aug. 7. They just won’t be swinging the bat in the competition.

Mariners can now look to Marlins for potential trade fits

Star Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez will be making his debut as a DJ at T-Mobile Park for the event. Rodríguez will be spinning the wheels of steel under his ‘DJ Pleno’ moniker.

Rodríguez recently talked about his passion for deejaying in a video posted on the MLB YouTube channel as part of the “Chasing 162” series.

The Alumni Home Run Derby will be part of the Mariners’ 50 Seasons Celebration Weekend, taking place after the Aug. 7 game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Baseball Hall of Fame member Ichiro Suzuki will headline the field of six contestants, which will also include Ryon Healy, Stefan Romero, Bucky Jacobsen, Austin Nola and Ryan Rowland-Smith. Yes, one of these is not like the other – Rowland-Smith was a pitcher in the big leagues. He went 0 for 5 in his career as a hitter.

The derby will be hosted by MLB Network personality Greg Amsinger, with Ken Griffey Jr. presiding as the derby commissioner, and Jay Buhner and Nelson Cruz serving as the derby coaches.

The derby itself will feature two rounds, with the top two hitters from the first round battling in the championship round. For more details on the format, click here.
